University of Virginia track and field athlete Brian Kollar (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) took second place at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Durham today in the javelin, smashing his own school record in the process.
Kollar threw 72.20m (236′ 10) to earn the silver and All-American honors. His toss broke his own school record by 1.18m (3′ 10.5″) and was just 42cm (17 inches) behind the national champion, Esko Mikkola of Arizona. Earlier this season Kollar won the ACC title in the javelin, setting the school record in the process.
Kollar is the first male athlete to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships since Rob Cook was so named in the steeplechase in 1994.
Tomorrow, Saturday, June 3, Kollar’s teammate Inge Jorgenson will compete in the women’s javelin competition. Jorgenson, who threw a season-best 50.24m en route to winning the Duke Invitational on April 7, is seeded 14th at the NCAA Championships. On April 21, Jorgenson won the ACC title, the first of her career.
