CHARLOTTESVILLE– – University of Virginia men’s head basketball coach Pete Gillen said Tuesday (June 20) that 6-9 center/forward Colin Ducharme will not return for his final year of eligibility in 2000-01.
“Colin informed me Monday that he has decided not to return for his fifth year of eligibility at the University of Virginia,” Gillen said. “I wish him well in all of his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions to the Virginia basketball program during the last four years.”
Ducharme, from Richmond, Va., started 45 of 61 games for the Cavaliers during his first two years in the UVa program. He averaged 5.5 points and 4.4 rebounds a game while shooting 55.7 percent (64-115) from the field and 68.8 percent (44-64) from the free throw line as a freshman during the 1996-97 season. As a sophomore in 1997-98, Ducharme averaged 7.8 points and 5.0 rebounds a game while shooting 50.3 percent (85-169) from the field and 73.3 percent (63-86) from the free throw line. He led the team in blocked shots both seasons with 41 in 1996-97 and 34 in 1997-98.
Ducharme was granted a medical hardship after missing all but one game during the 1998-99 season because of a broken left ankle. He returned for the 1999-2000 season and played in 29 games, starting two. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds a game last season, while shooting 53.3 percent (24-45) from the field and 68.4 percent (13-19) from the free throw line.
He scored 472 points and had 343 rebounds during his UVa career. Ducharme made 52.9 percent (176-333) of his field goal attempts and 71.0 percent (120-169) of his free throw attempts. He ranks sixth on Virginia’s career blocked shot list with 88.
Ducharme lived in one of Virginia’s prestigious Lawn rooms during the 1999-2000 academic year and graduated from UVa last month.
