Radio Station WWWV-FM To Carry Virginia Football And Men'sBasketball Games In Charlottesville Area

The Virginia Sports Network, which broadcasts University of Virginia football and men’s basketball games, has announced a move within the local FM affiliate market. Broadcasts will now be heard on 97.5 WWWV-FM beginning with the September 2 football opener and continuing through the 2003-2004 athletic seasons. This is a switch from last season when the local broadcast could be heard on 95.1 WQMZ-FM. The broadcast will continue to be carried locally on 1070 WINA-AM, the flagship station of the Virginia Sports Network.
The move to 97.5 WWWV-FM provides the network with a 50,000 watt FM signal in the local market. The 97.5 signal, which originates from Carter’s Mountain, can be heard north to Culpeper, south to Lynchburg, and east to Richmond. According to Brad Eure, President of Eure Communications, “Moving the broadcast to 3WV is a good move for both Eure Communications and Virginia athletics. The 3WV format lends itself to more sports programming and the audience is very sports-oriented. Virginia athletics will receive a significant boost in local coverage and receive promotional support from a local market leader.”
The move will allow fans traveling to Charlottesville on game days to also hear “Cavalier Saturday”, a pregame radio show beginning two hours prior to kickoff on both WWWV-FM and WINA-AM. “Cavalier Saturday,” co-hosted by WWWV Programming Director Rick Daniels and Jed Williams, will originate from within the west gate of the Carl Smith Center. Virginia Football’s FanFest area, which includes fan interactives, facepainters, giveaways and more, is also located inside the west gate.
“Having the pregame show originate from within the stadium, along with the addition of our FanFest area, will add greatly to the fan’s enjoyment of a Virginia Football game day,” said Mac McDonald, Director of Broadcasting for the Virginia Sports Network. “Adding 97.5 WWWV-FM to our radio network is great for the network. Now fans can listen to the pregame show as they drive into Charlottesville and the game broadcast from within the stadium.”
