CHARLOTTESVILLE– – University of Virginia guard Majestic Mapp has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is expected to be out of action four to six months.
Mapp, who is from the Bronx, N.Y., suffered the injury while playing basketball at St. Raymond’s High School, his alma mater, on August 2. He underwent an MRI on Tuesday (August 8) at the University of Virginia Medical Center which is part of the University’s health system. He is expected to undergo surgery on the knee later this month.
“We’ll wait for the swelling in Majestic’s knee to go down and for his range of motion to return before operating,” said Dr. Frank C. McCue III. “If everything goes well, he could begin rehabilitation pretty quickly after the operation and could be running in 10-12 weeks. Hopefully, he’ll be doing well in four months, but I would prefer to wait six months before he plays in a competitive situation.”
The 6-2 Mapp played in all 31 games for the Cavaliers as a freshman last season and started two. He averaged 5.3 points and 18.7 minutes of playing time a game, and was second on the team in assists with 69.
“Dr. McCue’s advice was to wait a few weeks before the surgery,” UVa head coach Pete Gillen said. “Majestic could be back as early as four months or he could redshirt. There is a chance he could play after January 1, but he won’t be back until he’s ready. Majestic and the doctors will make that decision.
“This is a big blow to the team. Majestic’s a tremendous young player and I feel bad for him, his family and his teammates. He’s overcome other things and he’ll overcome this injury. He recovered quickly from arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder this spring”
The Virginia team is preparing for a six-game trip to Europe later this month (August 16-27) and Mapp will make the trip with the team.
“Majestic will work with our trainer, Sue Saliba, during the trip,” Gillen said.
