INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Rising University of Virginia third-year Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) won his heat and, in the process, posted the top time in the preliminaries of the 100-meter breaststroke Wednesday afternoon (August 9) at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. Moses clocked a time of 1:01.19 to win his heat and advance to this evening’s semifinals of the 100 breaststroke.
Moses covered the first 50 meters of the 100 breaststroke at world record pace in 28.33 seconds, but slowed in the second 50 and finished in 1:01.19. Pat Calhoun swam the second fastest time in the 100 breast in 1:01.63, while Brendan Hansen was third in 1:01.75. The top 16 finishers advance to this evening’s semifinals. The 100 breaststroke finals will be held tomorrow evening, Thursday, August 10.
Moses was the only Virginia swimmer to advance from the preliminaries during the first day of competition, which included four events. Listed below are the results from all of Virginia’s swimmers who competed in the first day of competition:

The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials are being held August 9-16 at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. A maximum of 26 men and 26 women will be selected for the U.S. Olympic Team. First priority is given to all event winners and the top four finishers in the 100 and 200-meter freestyle. Second priority is given to second place finishers in all events except the 100 and 200 freestyle. If slots are still available on the team, the next priority goes to the fifth and sixth-place finishers in the 100 and 200 free.
