INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C./O’Neal), a 2000 University of Virginia graduate, has advanced to the semifinals of the 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. Finch advanced to the semis by placing sixth with a time of 2:00.61 in the preliminaries on Friday (August 11). The top eight finishers in tonight’s semifinals will advance to Saturday evening’s final.
Tom Malchow set an Olympic Trials record with his winning time of 1:55.67 in the 200 butterfly. In addition to Finch, Virginia had three current swimmers compete in the 200-meter butterfly. Rising fourth-year Michael Fuller (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) was 44th with a time of 2:03.98. Rising second-years Dan Zurowski (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop Ireton) and Evan Taylor (Issaquah, Wash./Issaquah) were 71st and 82nd, respectively. Zurowski posted a time of 2:06.38, while Taylor finished with a time of 2:08.41.
