INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia 2000 graduate Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C./O’Neal) will compete in the finals of the 200-meter butterfly at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials Saturday evening in Indianapolis. Rising third-year Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) placed second in the preliminaries of the 200-meter breaststroke, while rising second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) finished 13th in the prelims of the 200-meter butterfly. Both swimmers will compete in the semifinals Saturday evening at the Indiana University Natatorium.
Moses, who earned an Olympic berth by winning the 100-meter breaststroke with an American record time of 1:00.44 Thursday evening (August 10), clocked a time of 2:15.71 in the prelims of the 200 breast. Kyle Salyards turned in the top time of the preliminaries at 2:15.64, just seven hundredths of a second faster than Moses.
Lane posted a time of 2:15.58 to finish 13th in the preliminaries of the women’s 200-meter butterfly. The top 16 finishers advanced to the semis. Laura Sullivan (Sarasota, Fla./Peddie School), a 2000 UVa graduate, placed 22nd in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:16.34.
