INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia rising third-year Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) took another step in his quest for two gold medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics as he advanced to the finals of the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:13.13 in Saturday evening’s (August 12) U.S. Olympic Trials semifinals. In the finals of the 200-meter butterfly, 2000 UVa graduate Doak Finch (Southern Pines, N.C./O’Neal) finished seventh. In addition, rising Cavalier second-year Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) placed 13th in semifinals of the women’s 200-meter butterfly. The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials are taking place at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Moses, swimming in the first semifinal heat, clocked a time of 2:13.13, which proved to be the fastest time of the two semifinal races. Moses was on world record pace through the first 100 meters, but ended up just less than three seconds off the world record of 2:10.16, set by Mike Barrowman at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Kyle Salyards, who posted the top time in the preliminaries, won the second semifinal heat with a time of 2:13.62, a half of a second shy of Moses’ semifinal time. Moses turned in a time of 2:15.71 in the prelims Saturday morning. The final of the 200-meter breaststroke will take place Sunday evening (August 13).
In the men’s 200-meter butterfly, Finch clocked a time of 2:00.90 and finished seventh in the finals. Finch will compete in the 100-meter butterfly beginning Monday, August 14.
Lane was 13th in the semifinal of the women’s 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:15.00. She did not advance to the finals. Lane will compete in the 800-meter freestyle on Monday, August 14.
