INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia graduate Melanie Valerio qualified Sunday (August 13) for the semifinals of the women’s 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. Valerio will compete in the semifinals Sunday evening.
Valerio, a 1991 UVa graduate, clocked a time of 56.42 in the 100 freestyle, good for 11th place overall. She won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympic as a member of the 400-meter freestyle relay team.
In addition to Valerio, UVa’s Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) will be competing in the finals of the 200-meter breaststroke Sunday evening. Moses enters the finals as the number one seed after posting a time of 2:13.13 in the semifinals Saturday evening. The evening session begins at 8:00 p.m. and is being held at the Indiana University Natatorium.
