University of Virginia rising fourth-year Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) earned a spot in the finals of the 1500-meter freestyle by posting a time of 15:21.73 in Tuesday’s preliminaries at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. Grimes will swim in the finals of the 1500 freestyle Wednesday evening at the Indiana University Natatorium. The 1500-meter freestyle is the final event of the U.S. Olympic Trials, which began August 9.
Grimes, who swam in the eighth of nine heats, posted a time of 15:21.73 and held the top time until Chris Thompson won the ninth and final heat with a time of 15:21.71, just two hundredths of a second faster than Grimes. Grimes earned first-team All-America honors at the 2000 NCAA Championships by finishing sixth in the 1500-meter freestyle.
In addition to Grimes, UVa was represented in the 1500-meter freestyle by rising second-year Dan DeMarco (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South). DeMarco finished 21st with a time of 15:49.07.
