INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Virginia rising fourth-year Jamie Grimes (Olney, Md./Sherwood) finished fifth in the finals of the 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 15:21.80 Wednesday (August 16) at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, held at the Indiana University Natatorium. The 1500 freestyle was the final event of the eight-day U.S. Olympic Trials.
Grimes, who clocked a fifth-place time of 15:21.80 in the finals, swam nearly the same time (15:21.73) in finishing with the second-best time in the preliminaries. Erik Vendt won the 1500 freestyle with an American record time of 14:59.11, while Chris Thompson placed second in 15:09.16. Both earned spots on the U.S. Olympic Team.
UVa’s Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) is the only Virginia swimmer to make the U.S. Olympic Team. Moses won the 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a time of 1:00.44, just eight hundredths of a second off the world record. In addition to Moses swimming for the United States, UVa will be represented at the 2000 Sydney Olympics by three other swimmers from three different countries. Shamek Pietucha, a 1999 UVa graduate, will swim the 100 and 200-meter butterfly for Canada. Rising Virginia second-years Mirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) and Guy Yimsomruay (Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown) will represent Macedonia and Thailand, respectively. Bosevska, the 2000 ACC Women’s Rookie of the Year, will compete in the 400 and 800-meter freestyle, as well as the 400-meter individual medley. Yimsomruay will swim the 200-meter individual medley for Thailand.
