DEUME, BELGIUM – – Six players scored in double figures as the University ofVirginia men’s basketball team improved to 3-0 on its six-game Europeantour with a 110-73 victory over the Antwerp Junior team. The Cavaliersjumped out to a 58-34 halftime lead en route to their third consecutive winin as many days.
Roger Mason (Silver Spring, Md.) led a balanced scoring attack with 21points and added three assists. He made nine of 16 field goal attempts.Donald Hand (Paterson, N.J.) was 7-11 from the floor and totaled 20 pointsand also dished out four assists. Travis Watson (Brookneal, Va.)registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while KeithFriel (Durham, N.H.) poured in 16 points. Adam Hall (Katy, Texas) andChris Williams (Birmingham, Ala.) rounded out the Cavaliers’ double figurescorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Williams also pulled down sixrebounds, while Hall grabbed five rebounds. Stephane Dondon (Toulouse,France) added eight points and 10 rebounds.
“We seemed a little sluggish in the first half with our third game in threedays,” said Virginia assistant coach Tom Herrion. “We were a little sloppywith the ball, but played pretty hard. In the second half, we played muchbetter and really gained control early on. It was a balanced scoringattack and another game in which we were very unselfish and shared thebasketball. We also rebounded the ball well against a pretty good team.
“Tomorrow night’s game will be a very big challenge and the best game ofthe tour. From what we understand, we are playing a team (SunAir Osfende)that is one of the better club professional teams in all of Europe. It isgoing to be a big test. The have some very good American professionals onthe team. We are hoping the kids are excited to play them and that theycome on the floor energized despite it being our fourth game in four days.”Virginia plays the second of three games in Belgium on Tuesday (August 22)when they take on SunAir Osfende.
