CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team will take another step forward in its preparation for the upcoming 2000 soccer season by facing two quality opponents in exhibition contests at the University of Maryland. UVa will take on the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday, August 25th at 5:00 p.m. before meeting the St. John’s Red Storm on Saturday, August 26th at 5:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.
The Virginia men’s soccer program has won five national championships in the last 11 seasons. However, it has been nearly six years since Virginia won its last national title after posting a 1-0 victory over Indiana on December 11, 1994. With 10 starters returning from last year’s NCAA Quarterfinal squad, hopes are running as high as ever in Charlottesville for the start of the 2000 season.
Virginia will begin its quest for a sixth national championship by hosting the South Florida Bulls (Sept. 1) and the Jacksonville Dolphins (Sept. 3) in the Virginia Soccer Classic Tournament at Kl?ckner Stadium. After competing in the tournament, the Cavaliers will hit the road and return to College Park, Md. again, this time to compete in a powerful field of teams chosen to participate in the Fila/Maryland Invitational Tournament. Virginia will face South Carolina (Sept. 8) in the opening round of the tournament before facing the defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday, Sept. 10.
After wrapping up the tournament portion if its schedule, UVa will return to Charlottesville and the friendly confines of Kl?ckner Stadium where it will face 10 of its last 14 regular season opponents. Three of the four Cavalier games that will not be played at home are road contests against ACC-foes Wake Forest (Sept. 16), North Carolina (Sept. 24) and Clemson (Oct. 15). The lone remaining game is a neutral site match against William & Mary which will be played at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on September 27 in Virginia Beach, Va.
UVa will compete in most of their matches at home this year. In fact, Virginia does not play a non-conference road game at all in the entire 2000 season. The contests away from Charlottesville with South Carolina, Indiana and William & Mary are all on neutral sites, and the road games against WFU, UNC and Clemson are ACC (conference) opponents. Thus, all 12 of UVa’s non-conference opponents will either be played at home or on a neutral site.
The Cavaliers will round out their season schedule by competing in the ACC Tournament on November 9-12 in Winston-Salem, N.C. at Wake Forest University. A complete Virginia men’s soccer schedule can be found on the UVa athletic website at:
