CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team opens the 2001 season on Nov. 10 in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament against Mt. St. Mary’s at home. This is the earliest start to a season for the Cavaliers and their first appearance in the preseason WNIT. If Virginia advances to the second round, it would face either Delaware or George Washington. Other teams in the WNIT include Purdue, Louisiana Tech, Texas, Tulane, Rice, South Carolina, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Wichita State, Grambling, James Madison, Georgetown and Eastern Michigan. Second round action in the WNIT takes place Nov. 12 & 13 with the semifinals on Nov. 19 and the championship game on Nov. 20. Game sites and times of the second round, semifinals and championship games will be determined by the tournament director as the tournament progresses.
The Cavaliers play five games against in-state opponents this season. Virginia continues its rivalries with Virginia Tech and Old Dominion while it adds Liberty, Richmond and Hampton to the schedule. Other non-conference opponents include Loyola, St. Francis (Pa.) and St. Joseph’s. Virginia will travel to California over the Christmas break to play at UC-Santa Barbara on Dec. 28 and at Cal State-Northridge on Dec. 29.
Virginia’s contest against North Carolina on Feb. 11 in Charlottesville will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Four other ACC contests will be televised on the Regional Sports Network which includes Home Team Sports, Fox Sports South and the Sunshine Network.
The Cavaliers finished the 1999-00 season with a 25-9 mark overall and a 13-3 record in the ACC. Virginia returns its top three scorers from last year’s team that reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
