PARIS, FRANCE–The University of Virginia men’s basketball team closed out its European tour with a 116-72 triumph over Sceaux (prnounced “so”) BBC of France today. The Cavaliers were led in scoring by Keith Friel (Durham, N.H.), who chipped in 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including six 3-pointers. Virginia also had two players record double-doubles as Travis Watson (Brookneal, Va.) connected for 22 points and 10 rebounds and Donald Hall (Paterson, N.J.) added 17 points and 10 assists.
Chris Williams (Birmingham, Ala.) also reached double figures for the Cavaliers with a 19-point night on 9-of-11 shooting. He pulled down six rebounds and added three assists. Roger Mason (Silver Spring, Md.) returned to the lineup tonight and hit eight points to go along with six assists.
The Cavaliers led 57-44 at halftime. “We played the best half of the trip in the second half tonight,” said assistant coach Tom Herrion. “We played with lots of energy and we had real good balance, as you can see from the scoring. It was good inside-outside balance. We had very unselfish play tonight.
“Roger Mason returned to the lineup with no ill effects,” added Herrion. “It was good to have him back. On a negative note, [Stephane] Dondon did not dress for the game.” Dondon suffered an ankle injury in Virginia’s game against Lummen BBC on Wednesday.
With the win the Cavaliers improve to 5-1 on their trip.
