The Virginia women’s soccer team opened up the 2000 campaign with a 3-0 upset of in-state rival William & Mary today in Williamsburg. Virginia captain Katie Tracy (Richmond, Va./ James River) headed in an Ashley Meeker (Zanoni, Va./Hampton Roads) corner serve in the 18th minute for what would prove to be the game-winner. The game was the first at Virginia for Cavalier head coach Steve Swanson.
Erin Englehardt (Hasbrouk Heights, N.J./Immaculate Heart), starting in her collegiate debut, scored her first career goal by capitalizing on a Tribe turnover in their defensive third and gave the Cavaliers an insurance goal in the 55th minute. Darci Borski (Philadelphia, Pa./ Nazareth Academy) completed the scoring by taking control of a turnover and scoring in the 70th minute to give the Hoos a 3-0 lead.
The Cavaliers had the edge in most statistical catagories, including 15-14 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks. Jodi Clugston (Red Hill, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), starting in her first collegiate contest, notched her first career shutout as she stopped four Tribe shots.
Virginia will travel to Chapel Hill to face the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday, Sept. 1 at Fetzer Field.
