CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – As voted upon by the players on the University of Virginia men’s soccer team, Marshall Leonard (Midland, Ga./Shaw), Chad Prince (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) and Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie) were selected tri-captains for the 2000 UVa squad.

Leonard, a 5-7 defender/midfielder, returns for his third season as a starter in the back for Virginia. He has started every game of his college career for the Cavaliers, including all 24 games in 1999. Last season, Leonard played 1617 minutes during the regular season and logged 2233 minutes of playing time through the NCAA Tournament. He recorded his first collegiate game-winning assist in UVa’s 3-0 victory over Mount St. Mary’s (9/15/99) and had an impressive ACC Tournament as he helped guide UVa to a 2-0 shutout victory over Maryland in the quarterfinals (11/11/99) and a 2-1 win over Wake Forest in the semifinals (11/12/99). Leonard also started in Virginia’s 2-1 triple overtime victory over Princeton (11/21/99) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and in UVa’s 3-1 victory over Brown (11/28/99) in the second round of the tournament. He has recorded three career points coming on three assists as a Cavalier.

Prince, a 5-11 defender, returns for his fourth season as one of UVa’s top defenders. He started all 22 games he played in for Virginia last season. Prince gathered 1602 minutes of playing time during the regular season and collected 1950 minutes of playing time through the NCAA Tournament in 1999. He had an impressive `99 ACC Tournament as he also helped guide UVa to a 2-0 shutout victory over Maryland in the quarterfinals (11/11/99) and a 2-1 win over Wake Forest in the semifinals (11/12/99). Prince recorded his first career assist in Virginia’s 8-1 victory over Appalachian State (9/8/99) and was named to the Pacific Soccer Classic All-Tournament team after two solid performances on defense against Cal State Fullerton and UCLA.

Together, Leonard and Prince form one of the top defensive cores in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Totten, a 5-11 midfielder, returns for his third season of action. He is coming off a 1999 campaign where he was tabbed second team All-ACC. Totten started all 24 games for Virginia in `99 and gathered 1610 minutes of playing time during the regular season and played 2226 minutes through the NCAA Tournament. He finished last season fifth on the team in scoring with 17 points on six goals and five assists. Totten assisted on Drew O’Donnell’s game-winning goal in a 2-1 triple overtime victory over Princeton (11/21/99) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and tallied an assist on Sheldon Barnes‘ goal in Virginia’s 2-0 victory over Maryland in the ACC Tournament quarterfinal (11/11/99). He scored Virginia’s game-winning goal in the Coca-Cola Classic Tournament against Seton Hall in a 4-3 overtime victory in the season opener. Totten also scored a goal and posted the game-winning assist in UVa’s 2-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth (10/9/99) when he found teammate Drew O’Donnell on a cross. He gathered two goals and an assist in Virginia’s 8-1 victory over Appalachian State (9/8/99) and was selected to Soccer America’s Team of the Week (10/11/99). Totten was also named to the 1998-99 ACC Academic Honor Roll. He has scored 36 career points on 12 goals and 12 assists and has started all 46 games of his career. Totten has four career game-winning assists and one career game-winning goal.
