CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season when Georgetown defeated the Cavaliers 3-0 (15-5, 15-9, 15-11) Friday evening (September 1) at University Hall in first day action of the Jefferson Cup Tournament. In the other evening match, Kentucky defeated William & Mary 3-2 (15-10, 9-15, 16-18, 15-13, 15-8). Georgetown concludes first day play with a 2-0 record, while Virginia and Kentucky are 1-1 and William & Mary is 0-2.
Junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina led the Hoyas to victory over Virginia (1-1) by posting 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Kiran Gill added nine kills and 11 digs for the Hoyas (2-0). Freshman setter Jennifer Ward contributed 30 assists and six digs.
Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and fourth-year middle hitter Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) led the Cavaliers with seven kills apiece. Jones also notched 11 digs, while Zwarich contributed three blocks. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) registered a match-high 16 digs to go along with six kills.
Junior middle blocker April Barnhorst and senior middle blocker Megan Weiskircher led Kentucky to a 3-2 win over William & Mary. Barnhorst totaled 16 kills, and nine blocks, including four solo stops, while Weiskircher added 15 kills and 15 digs.
Senior outside hitter Ellen Gazdowicz led William & Mary with 20 kills and eight digs. Junior outside hitter Tara Tobias added 17 kills and 16 digs for the Tribe, while Sarah Gubler registered 57 assists and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Laurel Witt added 15 kills and 12 digs.
After splitting the first two games, William & Mary took a 2-1 lead with an 18-16 win in game three. The Wildcats rallied, taking the fourth and decisive fifth games by scores of 15-13 and 15-8 to earn the victory.
The Jefferson Cup Tournament concludes Saturday with a pair of morning matches. Georgetown plays William & Mary at 9:00 a.m. while UVa hosts Kentucky at 11:30 a.m.
