CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team kicked off its 2000 season with a 3-1 (16-14, 15-5, 10-15, 15-6) victory over William & Mary Friday afternoon in the Jefferson Cup Tournament at University Hall. In the first match of the tournament, Georgetown defeated Kentucky 3-0 (16-14, 15-12, 15-8).
Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) led the Cavaliers to the victory with a match-high 16 kills. She also added six total blocks and six digs. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) contributed 12 kills and tied teammate and fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) for match-high honors in digs with 13. Jones also tallied eight kills.
Senior outside hitter Ellen Gazdowicz led William & Mary with 18 kills and 10 digs. Junior Sarah Gubler registered 45 assists for the Tribe.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 16-14 and 15-5 victories in the first two games. William & Mary closed the gap to 2-1 with a 15-10 win in game three. UVa secured the victory with a 15-6 win in the fourth and final game.
In the first match of the tournament, Georgetown swept Kentucky 3-0 in the first round of the Jefferson Cup Tournament. The Hoyas won by scores of 16-14, 15-12, 15-8. Senior outside hitter Kiran Gill led Georgetown with 13 kills and added three service aces. Junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina and senior middle blocker Meg Troller notched eight kills apiece. Virginia won the match in a four game decision (16-14, 15-5, 10-15, 15-6).
Senior outside hitter Melissa Kracht led Kentucky with 15 kills. Junior middle blocker April Barnhorst posted eight kills and six blocks for the Wildcats.
The Jefferson Cup Tournament continues this evening with two matches. At 5:00 p.m., William & Mary plays Kentucky, and at 7:30 p.m. Virginia hosts Georgetown.
