CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team closed out the Jefferson Cup Tournament with a 3-1 (15-13, 15-8, 15-17, 15-7) victory over Kentucky (1-2) Saturday afternoon (September 2) at University Hall. With the victory, UVa improved to 2-1 on the season and sealed second place in the tourney. Georgetown won the Jefferson Cup with a perfect 3-0 record. The Hoyas clinched the tournament title with a 3-1 (15-10, 15-10, 16-18, 15-3) victory over William & Mary (0-3) Saturday morning.
First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) notched career highs of 22 kills and 16 digs to lead the `Hoos to the win over the Wildcats. Fourth-year middle hitter Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) also had an outstanding match with 18 kills, 10 blocks and eight digs. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) tied Davis for match-high honors in digs with 16. Both Zwarich and Jones were named to the All-Tournament team.
Senior middle blocker Megan Weiskircher paced Kentucky with 15 kills and 10 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Kristen Batt added 13 kills, while junior middle blocker April Barnhorst registered 10 kills. Weiskircher and Barnhorst were named to the All-Tournament team.
Virginia jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 15-13 and 15-8 wins in the first two games. The Wildcats scored the final two points in the third game to break a 15-15 tie and win 17-15. UVa closed out the match with a 15-7 victory in the fourth game.
In Georgetown’s 3-1 win over William & Mary, junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina led the Hoyas with 22 kills and 15 digs. Senior outside hitter Kiran Gill, who was the tournament MVP, added 19 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Lauren Warner notched 13 kills and eight digs. For Georgetown, Vtyurina and senior middle blocker Meg Troller were selected to the All-Tournament team.
Senior outside hitter Ellen Gazdowicz led William & Mary with 16 kills and 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Tara Tobias and junior middle blocker Laurel Witt tallied 11 kills apiece, while junior setter Sarah Gubler registered 49 assists. Witt was the Tribe’s selection on the All-Tournament team.
The Hoyas won the first two games by identical 15-10 scores, before William & Mary held off a GU rally to take the third game 18-16. Georgetown breezed to a 15-3 win in the fourth game that clinched the match.
Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, September 5 when it hosts James Madison at 7:30 p.m. in University Hall.
