CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team swept James Madison 3-0 (15-12, 15-7, 15-10) Tuesday evening (September 5) at University Hall. The win was the 99th for sixth-year UVa head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton, making her the winningest coach in Virginia volleyball history. Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) and fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) also reached milestones. Zwarich became the sixth Cavalier to reach the 1,000-kill mark, while Jones became the seventh UVa player to record 1,000 career digs.
Shelton sports a 99-70 (.586) record at Virginia and surpasses the former mark of 98 wins by a UVa volleyball coach, which was held by Jane Foley Bell who coached from 1980-85. Zwarich entered the match with 994 career kills and registered her 1,000th career kill late in the first game. She now has 1,012 career kills. Jones notched her 1,000th career dig early in the third and final game of the match. Jones, who entered the match with 996 digs now, has 1,002 in her career.
Zwarich led the Cavaliers to the victory with 18 kills, six digs and two blocks. She hit an impressive .471 (18 kills, 2 errors, 34 attempts) in the match. Jones contributed seven kills, six digs and three service aces. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) tallied nine kills and five digs for the Cavaliers. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) contributed 27 set assists, six digs and two block assists.
Senior middle hitter Karla Gessler and junior middle hitter Danielle Heinbaugh led James Madison with 10 kills apiece. Sophomore setter Jessica Evers totaled 22 assists and 11 digs for the Dukes.
Virginia returns to action on Friday and Saturday, September 8-9 when it travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to play in the Xavier Tournament. UVa plays Western Michigan on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Middle Tennessee State and Xavier on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively.
