COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team was upset by South Carolina by the score of 2-1 in the first game of the 2000 Maryland/Fila Invitational. UVa team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over USC before the Gamecocks scored two unanswered goals for the 2-1 victory at Ludwig Field on the campus of the University of Maryland.

Kenny Arena (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) scored Virginia’s lone goal of the game when he gathered a loose ball and fired a shot from 30 yards out that found the back of the South Carolina goal just 15:39 into the contest.

UVa’s lead was short lived however, as USC knotted the score at 1-1 when Jordan Quinn scored the first of his two goals in the game. Quinn collected a cross from teammate Ryan Daley and beat Cavalier goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) with a shot that glanced off the left post of the UVa goal at the 18:48 mark of the first half of play.

South Carolina’s Quinn scored the game-winning goal at 29:16 into the game when he was awarded a free kick after Virginia’s Comfort was called for using his hands on a ball outside of the box. Quinn connected on his direct kick, giving the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

South Carolina took its 2-1 lead into halftime and survived a 14-3 shot-on-goal advantage by Virginia in the second half of play to preserve it’s upset of the top ranked Cavaliers. Despited outshooting USC 23-8 for the game, Virginia recorded its first loss of the season.

South Carolina’s win was its first ever over Virginia. UVa now leads the all-time series 3-1-1.

With the loss, the Cavaliers drop to 2-1-0 overall, while the Gamecocks improve to 2-1-0.

Virginia will now prepare for its game against the Indiana Hoosier on Sunday, September 10. That contest will be played at 12:00 at Ludwig Field.
