CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Virginia volleyball team lost to Western Michigan 3-1 (15-6, 14-16, 15-7, 15-4) in the opening match of the 2000 Xavier Volleyball Invitational Friday afternoon (September 8) at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Broncos improve to 2-2.
Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) and first-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) played well in defeat for the Cavaliers. Zwarich registered a team-high 17 kills to go along with six digs and five blocks, including three solo stuffs. Zwarich also led the `Hoos with a .325 hitting percentage (17 kills, 4 errors in 40 attempts). Davis notched 13 kills and a team-leading 17 digs along with three blocks. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) contributed 40 set assists, while second-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Gershaw) added nine kills and a pair of blocks.
Senior outside hitter Alberta Griffin paced Western Michigan with 21 kills and 13 digs. Senior outside hitter Monyka Paul recorded 16 kills and 11 digs, while junior outside hitter M’Myia McQuirter posted 15 kills. Junior middle blocker Zakiya Pope also reached double figures in kills with 12 and added eight digs, while sophomore setter Ashley Ritter registered a match-high 64 set assists.
The Broncos took the first game 15-6, but UVa battled back to tie the match at one game apiece with a 16-14 victory in the second game. Western Michigan earned the victory by posting 15-7 and 15-4 wins in the third and fourth games, respectively.
Virginia returns to action in the 2000 Xavier Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, September 9 with a pair of matches. UVa plays Middle Tennessee State and Xavier at 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., respectively.
