CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Dan Ellis accounted for 336 total yards and twotouchdowns, and Virginia’s defense turned in a dominating performance in a 34-6victory over Division I-AA Richmond on Saturday.
Virginia (1-1) did not allow Richmond (1-1) into Cavaliers territory until1:53 remained in the third quarter.
The Spiders picked up a first down on an offsides penalty on their firstpossession but couldn’t get another one until TyRonne Turner broke loose for 12yards with less than two minutes to go in the half.
Ellis, known more for his arm, got it done with his feet as well. He scoredone first-half touchdown on a 3-yard option run, and set up David Greene‘s38-yard field goal by breaking a tackle, reversing field and running 22 yardsbefore being collared from behind by Chad Blackstock.
He wound up 19-for-28 for 299 yards and a touchdown. He also had sevencarries for 37 yards.
Antwoine Womack, who was mostly held in check by a Spiders defensedetermined to stop the run, scored first-half touchdowns on runs of 4 and 6yards.
Virginia might have been even more dominant in the first half if not forpenalties. The Cavaliers were flagged nine times for 75 yards before halftime.
The Cavaliers’ final score of the first half, a 25-yard field goal byGreene, was set up by a 55-yard pass from a scrambling Ellis to Tyree Foreman,who was run out of bounds with a second left.
Then on Virginia’s first possession of the second half, Ellis hooked up withJames Johnson on a 50-yard scoring play that capped a seven-play, 85-yarddrive.
The Spiders avoided a shutout when Sean Gustus scored from 3 yards out on afourth-down play with 11:50 left.
