Virginia Volleyball Posts 3-1 Victory Over Middle Tennessee State

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Virginia volleyball team evened its record at 1-1 in the 2000 Xavier Volleyball Invitational with a 3-1 (7-15, 15-10, 15-10, 15-3) victory over Middle Tennessee State Saturday afternoon (September 9) at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. The win improves UVa’s overall record to 4-2, while the Blue Raiders fall to 1-4. Virginia concludes play in the tournament later this evening when it squares off against host Xavier at 8:00 p.m.

Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led the Cavaliers to the victory with 13 kills, 13 digs, four service aces and two blocks. Jones also hit an impressive .464 (13 kills, 0 errors in 28 attempts) in the match. Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) tallied 12 kills and seven blocks, including two solo stops. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) led the Cavaliers in digs with 17 and also added nine kills and three service aces. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) contributed 30 set assists and 15 digs, while first-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) added 10 digs.

Senior middle blocker Lindsay Pritchard led Middle Tennessee State with nine kills and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Caia Morstad registered a match-high 18 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Alicia Scott contributed 12 digs and seven kills.

The `Hoos lost the first game to Middle Tennessee State 15-7, but responded well by winning the next three games. Virginia won the second and third games by identical 15-10 scores before closing out the match with a convincing 15-3 win in the fourth game.

The Cavaliers notched a season-high 11 service aces in the contest with Jones and Davis leading the way with four and three aces, respectively. UVa also posted 13 team blocks, including four solo stops, with Zwarich and second-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Greshaw) recording seven and six blocks, respectively.
