The University of Virginia men’s soccer team opened up a 1-0 halftime lead over the Indiana Hoosiers in the Cavaliers second game of the Maryland/Fila Invitational at Ludwig Field, but could not hold for the win as Indiana bounced back to score two second-half goals en route to a 2-1 victory. UVa also suffered a 2-1 loss to South Carolina on Friday (Sept. 8) and finished the tournament with an 0-2 mark.
The top ranked Cavaliers controlled the first half of play against Indiana and held a 7-2 advantage in shots-on-goal. Virginia’s forth shot of the contest gave UVa a 1-0 lead when Marshall Leonard (Midland, Ga./Shaw) connected with teammate Jonathan Cole (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) at the 29:12 mark when Cole headed in a cross from Leonard off of a free kick. The Cavaliers took their one goal lead into halftime.
In the second half of play, Indiana turned the tables on Virginia and became the aggressor. The Hoosiers outshot the Cavaliers 7-4 and connected on two scoring opportunities. IU tied the game at 1-1 when Matt Fundenberger headed in a cross from Ryan Mack at 63:19. Exactly 15 minutes later at 78:19, Michael Bock scored Indiana’s game-winning goal when the ball squirted loose from UVa goalkeeper Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong). Singer made a play on a ball kicked by Indiana’s Pat Noonan, but could not manage to gather possession for the Cavaliers. Bock collected the loose ball and put it into the open Virginia goal for the eventual game-winning score. IU held off a late UVa charge to preserve a 2-1 victory.
UVa’s Kenny Arena (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) and Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) were both named the the Maryland/Fila All-Tournament Team.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 2-2-0 overall on the season, while Indiana improves to 2-2-0 on the year.
UVa will look to rebound from its two-game loosing skid with a match against Northeastern on Wednesday, September 13 at Kl?ckner Stadium. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 and will be Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch’s 100th game as UVa’s head coach.
