CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Virginia volleyball team lost to Xavier 3-0 (16-14, 15-9, 15-12) in the final match of the 2000 Xavier Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening (September 9) at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 4-3 on the season. The Musketeers won the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record and improve to 4-3 on the season.
Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) and first-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) played well in loss for the Cavaliers. Zwarich registered a team-high 20 kills to go along with six digs and two blocks. Zwarich was the lone Cavalier to be named to the All-Tournament team, her second such honor this season, as she was also named to the Jefferson Cup Tournament All-Tournament Team September 2. Davis notched 16 kills and a team-leading 14 digs along with four blocks. Davis also led the `Hoos with a .314 hitting percentage (16 kills, 5 errors in 35 attempts). First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) recorded all of Virginia’s 44 set assists.
Junior right side hitter Sara Bachus led Xavier with 19 kills and 13 digs, while junior outside hitter Jill Hampton contributed 16 kills, eight digs, and three blocks. Senior setter Tami Ores registered a match-high 53 assists.
The Musketeers took the first game by a narrow margin, winning 16-14. Xavier earned the win by posting 15-9 and 15-12 wins in the second and third games, respectively.
Virginia returns to action at the 2000 Arkansas Volleyball Invitational on Friday, September 15 when they play host Arkansas at 7:00 p.m. UVa will face Michigan and Houston on Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
