CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer program will be represented by three former players when the United States Olympic soccer team competes in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Jeff Agoos (Dallas, Texas), Chris Albright (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ben Olsen (Middletown, Pa.) form the trio of former UVa players that make up a portion of the United States Men’s Olympic Team roster.
Agoos, a defender for UVa from 1986-1990, is Virginia’s only four-time All-American. He earned first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American honors in 1988 and 1990, was a second-team NSCAA All-American selection in 1989 and a third-team NSCAA All-American choice in 1986. Agoos was a member of the Cavaliers first ever National Championship team in 1989 after UVa finished the season with a record of 21-2-2. He sat out the 1987 season at UVa while he competed for the United States in the under-20 World Cup. Agoos was also a four-time, first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selection during his four years as a Cavalier. He started all 88 games he competed during his career and recorded 8,278 minutes on the pitch. Agoos ended his UVa soccer career with 39 career points resulting from 17 goals and five assists. Six of his 17 goals and two of his five assists were game-winners.
Albright, a forward for Virginia from 1997-1998, left UVa after his second season of play. He turned in a stellar season of performances during his sophomore year where he started all 23 games for Virginia. Albright recorded a team-high 43 points resulting from a team-high 20 goals and three assist, and was a first-team All-ACC selection. He was named to Soccer America’sAll-Freshman team in 1997 after playing in all 26 matches for UVa, finishing the season with 29 points after scoring 11 goals and adding seven assists. Albright ended his career at Virginia with 73 points, scoring 31 goals and 10 assists in just two seasons. He posted six game-winning goals and three game-winning assists during his two-year career as a Cavalier. Albright started 48 of the 49 games he appeared in and logged 4,162 minutes of playing time for his career.
Olsen, a midfielder for the Cavaliers from 1995-1997, played three seasons for UVa. During his three-year career at Virginia, the Cavaliers posted a team record of 56-8-8 (.833). Olsen was named the National Player of the Year by both Soccer Americaand Soccer Newsin 1997. During the `97 season, he was a Hermann Trophy finalist, an NSCAA first-team All-American selection, a member of the NCAA All-Tournament team and was named the ACC Tournament MVP. Olsen was also a first-team All-ACC choice in 1996 and 1997. He started all 69 games of his career and played 6,014 minutes for UVa. Olsen scored 109 career points (sixth all-time at UVa), resulting from 41 assists and 34 goals. He recorded team-highs with 54 points, 19 goals and 16 assists in his final year as a Cavalier. Olsen posted 13 game-winning assists and 12 game-winning goals at Virginia.
