RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team had six players advance the semifinals of singles brackets during the first day of competition at the 2000 Wyndham Garden Wolfpack Invitational Friday (September 15). Fourth-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and second-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) have advanced to the semifinals of the “A” Flight Singles, while fourth-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) and second-year Jen Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) have reached the semis of the “B” Flight Singles. In addition, fourth-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and first-year Laura James (Fairfax, Va./Centerville) have moved into the semifinals of “C” Flight Singles.
In the “A” Flight Singles competition, Schweer and Williams both earned first round byes. In the second round, Schweer posted a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 victory over Alice Sukner of Marshall. Williams advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-2 win over Anna Mitna of Marshall in the second round.
Cook and Tuchband both recorded a pair of victories in Friday’s opening day of play in the “B” Flight Singles. Cook defeated Meredith Spears of East Carolina in the first round 6-2, 6-1. She then posted a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kristen Nicholls of N.C. State in the second round. Tuchband opened the season with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Ana Ceretto of Marshall and then posted a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Lindsay Offutt of Davidson.
In “C” Flight Singles, Weaver defeated Appalachian State’s Jennifer Fayad 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. In the second round, she posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jessie Watkins of Marshall. In her collegiate debut, James notched a pair of victories. In the first round, James defeated Marshall’s Meghan Skalsky 6-3, 6-4 and then posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Andrea Terrill of East Carolina.
In “D” Flight Singles, third-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton) registered a pair of straight-set wins. Kim defeated Ali Fitzgerald of Appalachian State 6-0, 6-1 and East Carolina’s Kate Veazey 6-2, 6-1.
In “A” Flight Doubles first round play, Williams and Schweer defeated Tonya Eberhart and Tammy Beanlien of Appalachian State 8-0, while Weaver and James registered an 8-0 victory over Davidson’s Gayle Jones and Katherine Hatch. Tuchband and Kim suffered the Cavaliers’ lone loss of the day. The UVa duo lost to Marshall’s Anna Mitna and Ana Ceretto 8-5 in “A” Flight doubles play.
The Cavaliers continue play in the Wolfpack Invitational Saturday and Sunday, September 16-17.
