Virginia Volleyball Drops Pair Of Matches

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Virginia volleyball team lost a pair of matches at the 2000 Bank of Fayetteville Invitational on Saturday (September 16) at Barnhill Arena. The Cavaliers fell to 23rd-ranked Michigan 3-0 (15-1, 15-4, 15-6) and Houston 3-1 (15-4, 7-15, 15-4, 16-14). Virginia concludes the Bank of Fayetteville Invitational with an 0-3 record and now stands at 4-6 on the season.

Against Michigan, fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) and first-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) led Virginia with 10 kills apiece. Zwarich added five digs and four blocks, while Davis also contributed seven digs. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) had 31 set assists, seven digs and two blocks.

Nicole Kacor led 23rd-ranked Michigan (7-1) with 13 kills, while Sarah Behnke notched 12 kills and 14 digs. Alija Pittenger added 11 kills and 13 digs.

In a 3-1 loss to Houston (6-3), Zwarich totaled 13 kills and six blocks, while Davis posted a double-double with 12 kills, 14 digs and three block assists. Whittenburg recorded 40 assists and nine digs, while fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) tied Davis for team-high honors in digs with 14. Jones also served up five of UVa’s six aces.

Jennifer Wittenburg led Houston with 25 kills and 16 digs. Morgan Wallen dished out 39 assists and also added a match-high 19 digs.

Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, September 19 when it begins ACC play by hosting Duke at 7:30 p.m. at University Hall.
