RALEIGH, N.C. – University of Virginia second-year women’s tennis player Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) won singles and doubles titles Sunday (September 17) at the 2000 Wyndham Garden Wolfpack Invitational. Williams, who won the “A” Flight Singles title and teamed with fourth-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) to win “A” Flight Doubles bracket, was one of four Cavaliers to win singles titles in the tournament. Fourth-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian), first-year Laura James (Fairfax, Va./Centerville) and third-year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton) won the “B”, “C”, and “D” Singles Flights, respectively.
Williams defeated Schweer 6-0, 6-3 in the “A” Flight Singles final. The duo then claimed the “A” Flight Doubles title by defeating Marshall’s Anna Mitina and Ana Ceretto 8-4 in Sunday’s championship match. Williams was 4-0 in both singles and doubles play in the tournament. Schweer was also 4-0 in doubles play and 2-1 in singles competition.
In the “B” Flight Singles title match, Cook defeated second-year teammate Jen Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) 7-5, 6-1. Cook was 4-0 in singles play over the weekend, while Tuchband registered a 3-1 mark. Tuchband was also 3-1 in doubles competition.
James defeated fourth-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday’s final to earn the “C” Flight Singles title. In her first collegiate tournament, James was a perfect 4-0 in singles action and was 3-1 in doubles play with Weaver. Weaver registered 3-1 mark in singles play as well.
UVa’s fourth singles champion was Kim, who won the “D” Flight Singles title. Kim won the round robin format with a 4-0 record and earned the championship with a default victory over High Point’s Megan Hofmann. Kim was also 3-1 in doubles play with Tuchband.
In addition to the “A” Flight Doubles title won by Williams and Schweer, the Cavaliers won the fifth and ninth-place matches. Weaver and James took the fifth-place doubles match by defeating NC State’s Kristen Nicholls and Loni Worsley 8-5. Tuchband and Kim claimed ninth place by defeating Forbes Thompson and Lindsay Offutt of Davidson 8-6.
The Cavaliers return to action at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. on October 6-8.
