KNOXVILLE, Tenn.–Four University of Virginia golfers finished in the top 15 in the individual competition to lead the Cavaliers to a second place finish in the Coca-Cola Tennessee Tournament of Champions on Tuesday (Sept. 19). Louisiana State University won the 54-hole tournament with a team score of 13 under par 851 on the par 72 Holston Hills Country Club course. Virginia was second with an eight under par total of 856 and the host University of Tennessee team finished third with a five under par total of 859.
Senior Cameron Yancey (Blackstone, Va.) finished sixth in the individual competition to lead the Cavaliers. He had rounds of 67-69-76 for a four under par total of 212. Senior Mike Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md.) tied for 11th with a two under par total of 214 after rounds of 73-70-71, while junior Steve Marino (Fairfax, Va., 72-69-74) and sophomore Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn., 71-72-72) tied for 15th with one under par totals of 215.
Also competing for Virginia in the tournament were freshman Rusty Kennedy (Phoenix, Ariz., 231, 77-77-77) and junior Shep Nowlin (Lynchburg, Va., 231, 77-75-79).
Alan Morgan of Louisiana State won the individual competition with a seven under par total of 209 after rounds of 70-67-72. Jamie Elson of Augusta State finished in second place a stroke back at 210 with rounds of 74-66-70.
Virginia competes next in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic in Dalton, Ga., October 6-8.
