CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) destroyed the school record with 40 kills in leading the UVa volleyball team to a 3-2 (15-7, 7-15, 13-15, 15-12, 15-13) win over Duke Tuesday (September 19) at University Hall. The victory is UVa’s sixth-consecutive triumph over Duke. With the win, the Cavaliers snap their four-match losing streak and improve to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Blue Devils fall to 9-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Zwarich broke the former Virginia kills record of 31 set twice by Greta Jansson against NC State in the 1990 and 1991 seasons. In the match, Zwarich posted an impressive hitting percentage of .370 (40 kills, 10 errors in 81 attempts) and also added 10 digs and five blocks. Zwarich’s former career high for kills was 24 against NC State on September 25, 1999.
Third-year utility player Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem), who missed the first 10 matches with an injury, provided the Cavaliers with a spark. Harmon set career highs with 14 kills, including the game-winning kill, and 13 digs. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) also recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Second-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Gershaw) registered a career-high 13 kills to go along with five blocks. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) notched 71 assists to set a career high and also added 13 digs. First-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) led the `Hoos with 21 digs, which established a career high as well. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) contributed 19 digs and two service aces.
Jill Sonne and Bryn Gallagher led the Blue Devils with 20 kills apiece. Sonne also added a match-high 24 digs and seven assists, while Gallagher contributed 15 digs. Ashley Harris and Krista Dill were right behind in the kills department for Duke with 18 and 17, respectively. Harris also added 13 digs and five blocks.
The Cavaliers hit .357 in winning the first game 15-7. Duke led throughout the second game and won 15-7 to even the match at one game apiece. Virginia led 11-6 and 13-12 in the third game, but the Blue Devils scored the final three points to take the game and a 2-1 lead in the match. Duke led in game four, but Zwarich helped rally the Cavaliers. Trailing 10-7, Zwarich drilled consecutive kills to pull the Cavaliers within 10-9. UVa tied the game at 12-12 and went on to even the match at two games apiece with a 15-12 victory. In the fifth and deciding game, the `Hoos trailed early, but knotted the match at 4-4 and went on to take a 10-7 lead. The Blue Devils tied the game at 11-11, but Virginia took the next three points to open a 14-11 lead and went on to win 15-13 with Harmon providing the final point with her 14th kill of the match.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, September 22 when it hosts ACC rival Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m. in University Hall.
