CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team needed overtime to do it, but Virginia remains undefeated in the all-time series against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams after posting a 1-0 victory in front of 1,174 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium.
Virginia forward Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) gathered a pass from teammate Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and beat VCU goalkeeper Adam Mead for the game-winning goal at 99:36. The goal came 9:36 minutes into the first overtime period after both teams played through a scoreless regulation game.
Virginia goalkeeper Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) recorded his second consecutive shutout of the season after gathering four saves on the evening. Singer now has six career shutouts in goal for UVa.
With the victory, Virginia improves to 5-2-0 overall, while VCU falls to 4-2-1 with the loss. UVa is now 17-0-1 all-time against VCU, having outscored the Rams 86-7 over the 18-game span of the series history between the two schools.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday, September 24th when Virginia travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face the North Carolina Tar Heels. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm and will be played at Fetzer Field.
