SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – University of Virginia second-year swimmerMirjana Bosevska (Skopje, Macedonia/Trinity Prep) placed 18th in thepreliminaries of the 800-meter freestyle Wednesday evening (September 21)at the Olympic Games. In the men’s 100-meter butterfly, 1999 Virginiagraduate Shamek Pietucha (Edmonton, Alberta/Louis St. Laurent) placed 22ndin the prelims. In addition, UVa second-year swimmer Guy Yimsomruay(Bangkok, Thailand/Germantown) finished 43rd in the preliminaries of the200-meter individual medley. The Olympic swimming competition is beingheld at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre.
Bosevska, who is swimming for Macedonia in the Olympics, clocked atime of 8:46.39 to finish 18th. The top eight in the prelims advanced tothe finals. The 800-meter freestyle was the third event for Bosevska atthe Olympic Games. She was 20th in the 200 butterfly with a time of2:12.59 and 17th in the 400-meter individual medley (4:48.08).
In the men’s 100-meter butterfly, Pietucha, who is swimming forCanada, posted a time of 54.14 to finish 22nd overall. The top 16 in thepreliminaries advanced to the semifinals. Pietucha, the 1999 NCAA Championin the 200 butterfly, placed 18th in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of1:59.59. Pietucha will swim the butterfly leg of Canada’s 400-meter medley relay team, which begins this evening (September 21).
Yimsomruay touched in 2:08.38 to finish 43rd in the 200-meterindividual medley on September 20. He was representing Thailand in theOlympics.
Former Virginia swimmer Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) is scheduledto swim the breaststroke leg on the USA’s 400-meter medley relay. Theprelims will be held this evening (September 21) while the finals takeplace late Saturday evening, September 23.
