SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Former University of Virginia swimmer Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) helped the USA qualify for the finals of the 400-meter medley relay with the third fastest time of the preliminaries on Friday (September 22) at the Olympic Games. Moses swam the breaststroke leg on the relay. In addition, 1999 Virginia graduate Shamek Pietucha (Edmonton, Alberta/Louis St. Laurent) swam the butterfly leg of Canada’s 400 medley relay team that finished eighth and qualified for the finals.
Moses and teammates Neil Walker (backstroke), Tommy Hannan (butterfly) and Jason Lezak (freestyle) posted a time of 3:38.59 to take third place, just nine hundredths of a second off the top time. Germany posted the top time in the prelims at 3:38.50, while Hungary was second at 3:38.58, only one hundredth of a second ahead of the USA. Moses, who won a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke earlier in the Olympic Games, swam his 100 breast leg in 1:01.34.
Pietucha helped Canada take the eighth and last spot in the finals with a time of 3:40.56. Pietucha swam his 100-meter butterfly leg in 53.27 seconds. He finished 18th and 22nd in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly events earlier in the Olympics.
