PIKESVILLE, Md. – Fourth-year University of Virginia men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) won two singles matches and teamed with fourth-year Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) to win a doubles match at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships Thursday (September 21) at the Suburban Club of Baltimore County. The T. Rowe Price Clay Court Championships serve as the opening leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam.
Vahaly, the top seed in the 64-player singles bracket, posted 6-3, 6-1 first round win over Cesar Obieta of New Mexico State. He then defeated California’s Robert Kowalczyk 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. Vahaly entered the 2000-01 season ranked third in the preseason edition of the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Also in singles play, UVa’s Montgomery lost to Mika Kangas of Southern Mississippi 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. In the singles consolation bracket first round, Montgomery dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Minnesota’s Jorge Duenas.
Vahaly and Montgomery are seeded third in the 32-team doubles bracket and the duo opened doubles play with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Louisville’s Tvrtko Kujundzic and Joachim Lien. Vahaly and Montgomery are ranked 11th in the preseason WingspanBank.com doubles rankings.
The T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships run through September 24 at The Suburban Club of Baltimore County in Pikesville, Md.
