PIKESVILLE, Md. – Fourth-year University of Virginia men’s tennis player Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) won his third round singles match at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships Friday (September 22) and then teamed with fourth-year Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) to win a second round doubles match. The T. Rowe Price Clay Court Championships serve as the opening leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam and are being held at the Suburban Club of Baltimore County.
Vahaly, the top seed in the 64-player singles bracket, registered a 6-2, 6-1 win over Thomas Haug of Minnesota in the third round. Vahaly will play Stanford’s David Martin in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
In the 32-team doubles tournament, Vahaly and Montgomery advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Robert Kowalczyk and Balazs Veress of California. In the quarterfinals, the third-seeded UVa duo plays fifth-seeded Andy Crews and Peter Handoyo of Tennessee.
The T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships run through September 24 at The Suburban Club of Baltimore County in Pikesville, Md.
