CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team lost to Atlantic Coast Conference rival Wake Forest 3-0 (15-12, 15-10, 16-14) Friday (September 22) at University Hall. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons improve to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Virginia was led by fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) who tallied a match-high 17 kills (5.67 per game) after setting a school record with 40 kills (8.0 per game) in a 3-2 win over Duke on September 19. Zwarich hit .324 in the match (17 kills, six errors on 34 attempts) and added nine digs and two block assists. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led the `Hoos with 12 digs, while first-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) notched 34 assists.

Junior middle blocker Margaret Davidson posted 14 kills and seven digs to lead Wake Forest to the victory. Junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya tallied 11 kills and nine digs, while sophomore outside hitter Amanda Tiller rounded out Wake’s players in double figure kills with 10. Sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips totaled 42 assists and 10 digs to record the Demon Deacon’s only double-double of the match.

In the first game, Wake Forest jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Cavaliers battled back to tie the game at 7-7 and the `Hoos eventually took a 12-8 lead. The Demon Deacons scored the final seven points of the game for a 15-12 victory. UVa took 4-0 and 5-3 leads in the second game, but Wake Forest tied the game at 5-5 and took the lead for good 6-5. Wake went on to win the second game 15-10. In the third game, Virginia went up 4-1, but the Demon Deacons tied the match at 4-4. With the match tied at 14-14, The Demon Deacons were able to score the final two points to win the game and the match.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, September 23 when it hosts ACC rival Florida State at 7:30 p.m. in University Hall.
