SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Former University of Virginia swimmer Ed Moses (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) helped the United States set a world record in winning the gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay late Friday evening (September 22) at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre. The Moses-led USA relay team clocked a time of 3:33.73, which shattered the former world record of 3:34.84 set by the United States in the 1996 Olympics.
Moses, who swam the breaststroke leg, turned in a time of 59.74 which is the fastest breaststroke leg ever swam in the medley relay. He increased the USA’s lead to a full body length from .42 seconds to 2.06 seconds over Australia.
Lenny Krayzelburg led off the relay for the United States in the backstroke, with Moses following in the breaststroke. Ian Crocker followed in the butterfly leg and Gary Hall Jr. anchored the relay in the freestyle.
Australia won the silver medal with a time of 3:35.27, 1.54 seconds behind the United States. Germany won the bronze in 3:35.88.
Moses won the silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke earlier in the Olympic Games. His gold medal winning performance in the 400 medley relay marks the second-consecutive Olympic Games that a UVa swimmer has won a gold medal as Melanie Valerio (’92) won a gold as a member of the USA’s 400-meter freestyle relay team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
