CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) tallied a match-high 23 kills to lead the Cavaliers to a 3-1 (15-9, 14-16, 15-8, 15-6) victory over Florida State in collegiate volleyball action at University Hall Saturday (September 23). Zwarich led four UVa players in double figure kills as the `Hoos improved to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Lady Seminoles fell to 11-4 overall and 0-2 in the ACC with the loss.
In addition to the 23 kills, Zwarich also recorded a match-high nine blocks. In three matches this week Zwarich totaled 80 kills for an average of 6.67 kills per game. First-year Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) notched a double-double with 17 kills and a team-high tying 16 digs. Davis also added five block assists. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) also recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs. Third-year Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) tallied 13 kills, seven digs and five blocks. First-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) equaled Jones with 16 digs for team-high honors, first-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) notched a match-high 58 assists and added four block assists.
Senior outside hitter Jennifer Werrick led Florida State with 17 kills and a match-high 18 digs. Junior middle blocker Norisha Campbell had 13 kills and five blocks, while junior middle hitter Elizabeth Pound contributed 12 kills. Sophomore Jamie Hibbard totaled 55 assists and 10 digs for the Lady Seminoles.
The Cavaliers hit .267 in the match, while Florida State was only able to hit .147. The Cavaliers totaled 80 kills to FSU’s 65. UVa also held a big advantage in blocks as they recorded 15 total team blocks to the Lady Seminoles’ six. Florida State, did however, hold an 84-65 advantage in digs.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, September 29 when it travels to Atlanta, Ga. For a 7:30 p.m. ACC match against Georgia Tech.
