Chapel Hill, N.C. – The No. 8 Virginia men’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to come from behind and defeat No. 10 North Carolina, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. With the victory, Virginia improves to 6-2, 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina falls to 6-2, 1-1. The Cavaliers have defeated Carolina five straight times.
The Tar Heels took a 1-0 lead in the first half when freshman Logan Pause took a pass from Chris Carrieri and beat Virginia goalkeeper Kyle Singer one-on-one for the goal. That goal was the extent of the offense in the first half, as each team could muster only four shots in the opening 45 minutes.
The Cavaliers scored twice in a span of 1:46 in the second half to take command of the game. At the 62:49 mark, Ryan Gibbs took a pass from Steve Totten and one-timed it into the goal from point-blank range to tie the score at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Virignia’s leading scorer on the season, Alecko Eskandarian took a pass from Ryan Trout and scored on a one-touch shot from 20 yards out to the left of the goal.
The Wahoos held the UNC offense in check the rest of the way as Carolina tried to battle back and tie the score. Sheldon Barnes added Virginia’s final goal of the game at 88:51 on an unassisted, breakaway goal that iced the win.
Virginia outshot Carolina, 16-8, in the game and held UNC’s leading scorer, Chris Carrieri, to just two shots on goal in the contest. Michael Ueltschey made four saves in goal for Carolina while Singer had three for the Cavs.
Carolina returns to action on Wednesday night at Old Dominion and then will play at ACC rival Duke next Sunday.
