VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team had its four-game winning streak snapped, as William & Mary topped the Cavaliers 3-2 in an overtime thriller at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Despite UVa’s Alecko Eskandarian (Montvale, NJ/Bergen Catholic) knotting the score at 2-2 with :27 seconds remaining in regulation, the Cavaliers came up short in the end when the Tribe’s Phillip Hucles scored his second goal of the contest at 99:11 to give William & Mary the overtime victory.
After both teams played through a scoreless first half of play, William & Mary’s Hucles scored the game’s first goal at 49:19 when Ralph Bean sent a cross in front of the UVa goal which Hucles gathered and chipped-in to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead. However, Virginia answered right back just over five minutes later (54:20) when Jonathan Cole (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) played a ball to Eskandarian to set up the Cavaliers first goal of the contest. Eskandarian gathered the pass and fired a shot from 20 yards that found the back of the William & Mary goal out to tie the score at 1-1.
It appeared as though the Tribe was going to pull out a regulation victory when Caleb Stoddart scored William & Mary’s second goal of the game with just under five minutes to play (85:04). Kevin Knott sent a direct kick towards the UVa goal that connected with Stoddart after he leaped into the air, twisted in mid-air, and booted a shot that found the back of the net.
But Virginia would not quit and put together a late rally to try and tie the game. With :27 seconds left in the match, UVa did just that. Eskandarian fielded a loose ball and took a shot from 23 yards away that beat W&M goalkeeper Billy Platz to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, William & Mary’s Adam Schultz sent a pass to Hucles that resulted in the game-winning goal at 99:11. Hucles gathered the pass and took a shot from 18 yards out just left of the goal. The shot found its way past UVa goalkeeper Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and landed in the right corner of the net in goal for the game-winning marker.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 6-3-0 overall, while the win improves William & Mary’s record to 3-3-1 on the season. The Cavaliers are now 13-5-4 all-time against the Tribe.
UVa will return to action on Sunday, October 1 when Virginia hosts the North Carolina State Wolfpack in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm and will be played at Kl?ckner Stadium.
