ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team tied Navy 6-6 in the first day of play at the Navy Invitational Friday (September 29). Illinois State defeated Oklahoma 5-1 in the other match of the round-robin tournament. Play in the tournament continues tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.
The Cavaliers received singles wins at the #2, #3, #4 and #8 positions. UVa also garnered victories at #1 and #3 doubles.
At #2 singles, fourth-year Brian Hunter (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) defeated Navy’s Chris McGrath 6-0, 6-3, while third-year Jason Romesburg (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) recorded a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Ryan Osgood at #3 singles. Second-year Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over the Mids’ Jim Shaughnessy at #4. The final singles victory for Virginia came at the #8 position as first-year Patrick Guarnieri (Potomac, Md./Landon School) notched a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Rob Kurrle.
In doubles play, the UVa tandem of fourth-year Tommy Croker (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens) and first-year Preston Walters (Atherton, Calif./The Menlo School) recorded an 8-6 win over Grant Carona and Chris McGrath at #1 doubles. Virginia’s sixth win of the afternoon came at #3 doubles as third-year Jonathan Chou (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and second-year Peter Cownie (Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling) defeated Navy’s Ryan Osgood and Jim Shaughnessy 8-3.
