ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Virginia volleyball team lost to ACC rival Georgia Tech 3-1 (15-6, 13-15, 15-5, 15-8) Friday (September 29) at O’Keefe Gym before 1,030 spectators. With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Yellow Jackets improve to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the ACC with the victory.
Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) paced the `Hoos with 24 kills and a .339 hitting percentage. Zwarich had only five hitting errors in 56 attempts. She also recorded eight digs and a pair of blocks. First-year Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) notched a double-double with a career-high tying 22 kills and 10 digs. Davis also had two blocks. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) led the Cavaliers in digs with 15, while first-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) totaled 58 set assists and nine digs.
Junior hitter Eida Mabry led a strong Georgia Tech hitting attack with 20 kills on 36 attempts for a .389 percentage. Junior outside hitter Maja Pachale hit an impressive .471 with 18 kills and just two errors in 34 attempts and she also added 17 digs. Junior middle blocker Kyleen Bell totaled 18 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. Senior middle blocker Teryl Townsend contributed 14 kills, 12 digs and four blocks for the Yellow Jackets. Freshman setter Kele Eveland led the offense for the Jackets as she tallied 66 assists and recorded 16 digs.
As a team, Georgia Tech hit an impressive .365 for the match (84 kills, 19 errors in 178 attempts), while the Cavaliers hit .234 (69 kills, 23 errors in 197 attempts). The Yellow Jackets also held an 89-65 edge in digs.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday, September 30 when it travels to Clemson, S.C. for a 6:00 p.m. ACC match against Clemson.
