CLEMSON, S.C. – University of Virginia first-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) notched a double-double with 20 kills and 17 digs to lead the Cavaliers to a 3-1 (4-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-3) ACC win over Clemson at Jervey Gym Saturday evening (September 30). UVa’s win snapped a four-match losing streak to the Tigers. Virginia now stands at 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the ACC on the season, while Clemson falls to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Davis led five UVa players in double figure kills with her team-high 20. Third-year utility player Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) notched 16 kills and a match-high eight blocks, including two solo stops. Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs and also added five blocks. First-year outside hitter Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) rounded out the Virginia players in double figure kills with a career-high 11. She also added four block assists. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) was the third Cavalier to register a double-double in the match with 63 assists and 13 digs. Whittenburg added four blocks and three service aces as well. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) registered a match-high 20 digs and added six kills and two block assists.
Freshman Kiki Dallao led the Tigers with 27 kills and 14 digs. Junior Jodi Steffes added 12 kills, while junior Meredith Kirtland recorded 10 kills, 15 digs and seven blocks. Sophomore setter Jessi Betcher contributed 58 set assists and 12 digs for Clemson.
After dropping the first game 15-4, the `Hoos rallied to win the next three games for the 3-1 victory. UVa won the second and third games by 15-7 and 15-9 scores, respectively. Clemson jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the fourth game, but UVa rallied with 10 consecutive points to take an 11-8 edge. The Tigers won the next four points to take a 12-11 lead, but with the match tied at 13-13, the Cavaliers tallied the next two points to close out the game and the match.
Virginia returns to action on Friday, October 6 when it hosts NC State at 7:30 p.m. at University Hall.
