For the second consecutive week, the Cavaliers and Blue Devils needed an extra session of hockey, and for the second consecutive week, Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) provided the golden goal to send the Hoos to the win. Goodloe intercepted a Blue Devil pass in the backfield and drove to the circle where she fired a shot into the boards with 2:47 left in the overtime period. With the win, the Cavaliers (13-6) advance to the ACC semifinals to face the top-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday.

After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers took the early lead as Molly McManus (Oakton, Va./Oakton) notched her first career goal on a penalty corner play. Katie Jo Gerfen slotted the ball to McManus on the left, who one-timed the ball into the cage at the 27:00 mark, giving UVa a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils forced eight corners in the half, but they were unable to connect until the final one, which came with ten seconds to play. Duke’s Courtney Sommer passed the ball to Melissa Yuppa, who scored with 7.2 seconds to play, notching the equalizer and sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Duke’s Robin Merritt got off a flick shot but it went just wide of the Virginia cage. Goodloe had a shot earlier in the extra session but Duke keeper Hallie Smith saved it. Virginia’s Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) had four saves on the day.

Virginia will face the top-seeded and second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 pm at the University of Maryland. The #3 Terrapins and the #2 Demon Deacons tangle in the first semifinal which will start at 4:00
