DURHAM, N.C. – Ninety minutes of regulation and two 15-minute overtime periods weren’t enough to decide Thursday night’s (November 2) first round ACC Tournament game between the University of Virginia women’s soccer team and Duke at Koskinen Stadium. Instead, the teams had to go to sudden death penalty kicks before the Blue Devils advanced to the second round of the tournament, 4-3.

The two teams tied 0-0 in 11-on-11 action, and then tied 3-3 in the first round (first five kicks) of penalty kicks. Then, in the first sudden death round, Duke’s Stefanie Kraay beat UVa’s first-year goalkeeper, Jodi Clugston (Red Hill, Pa./ Upper Perkiomen) to put the Blue Devils ahead, 4-3. Virginia had a chance to answer with third-year Laura Gaworecki (Houston, Texas/ Cypress Creek), but the midfielder missed her shot wide left, allowing Duke to advance.

The game, which is officially scored as a tie, moves the Cavaliers to 10-7-1 on the season. With their opportunity to garner an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament lost, the Cavaliers will have to wait until Sunday (November 5) to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the 48-team NCAA Tournament. If UVa is given a bid, it will play either Wednesday night (Nov. 8), or on Saturday or Sunday (Nov. 11 or 12). The Cavaliers will play on Wednesday unless they are one of 16 teams granted a first-round bye.
