CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team defeated the Maryland Terrapins by the score of 2-0 in front of 3,096 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium. After playing through a scoreless first half of play, UVa’s Ryan Gibbs (West Chester, Pa./East) and Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) each scored goals in the second half en route to Virginia’s fourth shutout of the season. The game was the final regular season match for both teams.

UVa’s Gibbs scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 63:13 when Eskandarian sent a pass upfield to a streaking Steve Totten (Allentown, N.J./Peddie). Totten sent a pass to Gibbs, who then fired a shot past Maryland goalkeeper Christian Lewis to make it a 1-0 Virginia lead. The Cavaliers would add an insurance goal at 75:07 when Eskandarian dished-out his second assist of the game, this time to Barnes. Barnes gathered Eskandarian’s pass and fired a shot from nearly the identical spot as Gibbs did, which pushed UVa’s lead to 2-0.

Virginia goalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) faced only two shots on the evening in goal, but gathered one save and teamed with the Cavalier defense to post UVa’s fourth shutout of the season.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 13-4-1 overall, 5-1-0 in the ACC. Maryland’s record falls to 10-8-0 overall, 1-5-0 in the conference with the loss.

Virginia will return to action when the Cavaliers travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament. The tournament runs from November 9-12 and will be played at Spry Soccer Stadium. UVa will await the outcome of the Duke vs. Wake Forest match on Saturday, November 4th to determine the Cavaliers seeding in the ACC Tournament.
