CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) drilled a match-high 19 kills for her 22nd-consecutive double digit kill performance and hit .394 to lead the Virginia volleyball team to a 3-0 (15-7, 16-14, 15-5) victory over Clemson on Friday (November 3) at University Hall. With the victory, the Cavaliers sweep the season series from Clemson and improve to 14-12 overall and 7-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers fall to 11-15 overall and 4-8 in the ACC with the loss.
Zwarich averaged 6.3 kills per game in the match and increased her season total to 478 to move into third place on UVa’s single season kills list. She is 20 kills shy of Anne Marie Hammers’ single season school record of 498 set in 1991. With 1,431 career kills, Zwarich is second on Virginia’s career kills list, only 34 kills short of Greta Jansson’s (1988-91) school record total of 1,465.
A trio of Cavaliers, fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), third-year utility player Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and first-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake), each totaled nine kills. Jones also led the `Hoos with 10 digs, while Harmon and Davis added seven digs apiece. Davis had her consecutive double-double streak snapped at 13. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) notched 30 assists for the Cavaliers.
Junior outside hitter Meredith Kirtland paced the Tigers with 13 kills and nine digs, while junior rightside hitter Jodi Steffes contributed 10 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Jessi Betcher dished out 36 assists and tallied eight digs for Clemson.
Virginia led throughout the first game, as it jumped out to an 8-3 lead and extended the advantage to 13-5 before winning 15-7. UVa had four service aces in the first game. Virginia took an early 9-4 lead in game two, but Clemson rallied to take a 10-9 edge. The Tigers increased their lead 14-11, but the `Hoos scored the final three points for a 16-14 triumph. In game three, Virginia hit an impressive .571 (24 kills, 4 errors on 35 attempts) en route to a 15-5 victory. With the third game tied at 2-2, UVa scored the next 10 points to break the game open.
The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday, November 4 when they host ACC rival Georgia Tech on Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. in University Hall.
